What to Expect at a Free In-Home Flooring Estimate (and What to Ask)

If you've never had a flooring project done before, the estimate process can feel like a black box. Someone shows up, looks at your floors, and eventually you get a number — but what actually happens in between, and how do you know if you're picking the right installer?

Here's what an in-home estimate should look like, and the questions worth asking while someone's standing in your living room.

Why an in-home estimate beats a phone quote

Flooring isn't a one-size-fits-all product. The right material and the right price depend on square footage, subfloor condition, room layout, how much furniture needs to move, and what's already down. None of that can be judged accurately over the phone or from a photo.

A real in-home estimate means someone comes to your house, measures the actual space, looks at the subfloor, and sees the conditions firsthand — humidity, sunlight exposure, pets, high-traffic areas, all of it. We do this at no cost and with no obligation, because a number that isn't based on your actual home isn't a real number.

What happens during the visit

A good estimate visit generally covers a few things:

Measuring the space. Not just square footage — room shapes, doorways, transitions between rooms, and anywhere the flooring will need to tie into tile, carpet, or another material already in place.

Checking the subfloor. Concrete slab, plywood, existing tile — what's underneath matters as much as what goes on top. Uneven or damaged subfloor can affect both the material recommendation and the install approach.

Bringing samples. You should be able to see and touch actual product in your own lighting, next to your own walls and cabinets. Showroom lighting and your living room lighting are two different things.

Talking through use. A guest bedroom that sees no foot traffic has different needs than a kitchen, a lanai, or a home with large dogs. The right recommendation changes based on how the room actually gets used.

Giving you an exact quote. Not a range, not a "starting at" number — a real quote based on your home, your material choice, and your square footage.

Questions worth asking

Whoever you're considering hiring, these are fair questions to ask during the estimate:

What's included in the price? Removal of old flooring, moving furniture, trim and transition pieces — make sure you know what's covered and what isn't before you commit.

How long will installation take? Timelines vary by material and square footage, but you should get a realistic estimate, not a guess.

What brands do you carry, and why? An installer who can explain why they chose their product lines is worth more than one who just points at a catalog. We carry Mohawk, Shaw, MSI, Daltile, and COREtec because we trust what's behind them.

Who's doing the actual installation? Ask whether it's an in-house crew or subcontracted out, and how long they've been doing this work.

What happens if something's found once the old floor comes up? Subfloor issues, moisture, or damage sometimes show up mid-project. A straightforward installer will tell you how that gets handled before it happens, not after.

Can I see reviews or references? A company with a strong, verifiable track record shouldn't hesitate to point you to them.

A note on pricing

Every home, every material, and every project is different, which is exactly why we don't quote prices over the phone or give ballpark ranges online. The only way to get a number you can actually trust is to have someone measure your space and see your home. That's what the free in-home estimate is for — an exact quote, not a guess.

Red flags to watch for

A few things worth being cautious about: pressure to sign the same day, quotes given without anyone measuring your home, and installers who can't clearly answer what brands or materials they use. Flooring is a big enough investment that it's worth taking the time to get it right.
