How to Choose a Flooring or Remodeling Contractor in Central Florida
Picking the right contractor matters more than picking the right material. Even the best luxury vinyl plank in the world looks bad if it's installed poorly, and a great tile job can be ruined by a crew that rushes the prep work.
We've been doing this in Central Florida since 2016, and we've walked into plenty of homes to fix jobs that went wrong somewhere else. Most of those problems trace back to the same handful of decisions homeowners made before a single box of flooring was ever opened. Here's what we'd want you to know.
Start With Licensing and Insurance
This is the least exciting part of hiring a contractor, and it's the part people skip most often. Don't.
A legitimate flooring or remodeling company in Florida should be able to show you proof of licensing and liability insurance without hesitation. If someone gets hurt on your property during a remodel, or if a crew damages your subfloor or cabinets, insurance is what protects you from being on the hook for it.
Ask directly. A company that's proud of its credentials will hand them over. A company that gets vague or changes the subject is telling you something.
Read the Reviews — But Read Them Closely
Star ratings are a starting point, not the whole story. Look at what people are actually saying. Are reviewers describing a company that showed up on time, communicated clearly, and stood behind their work? Or are the reviews thin, generic, and clearly written in a hurry?
We're proud of our 5.0 rating across 248+ Google reviews, and it's something our customers in Wildwood, The Villages, and Ocala helped us build one job at a time. But whoever you hire, take the time to actually read a few pages of reviews, not just the star average at the top.
Get the Estimate in Person
A flooring or remodeling quote given over the phone, sight unseen, isn't worth much. Every home is different — subfloor condition, room shape, moisture levels, how much furniture needs to move — and none of that shows up in a phone call.
A contractor who's willing to come to your home, measure, walk the space, and bring samples is a contractor who's actually pricing your job instead of guessing. That's the whole idea behind a free in-home estimate: it gives you a real, exact number instead of a ballpark that might change once work starts.
Ask Who's Actually Doing the Work
Some companies subcontract every job out to whoever's available that week. That's not automatically a red flag, but you deserve to know it going in. Ask who will be in your home — an in-house crew or a sub — and how long that team has been doing this kind of work.
Consistency matters. A crew that installs flooring together every week develops a rhythm and catches problems before they become callbacks. A rotating cast of subcontractors doesn't always have that same accountability.
Watch for Pressure Tactics
Be cautious of any contractor pushing you to sign the same day, especially with a "deal" that expires if you don't. Real flooring and remodeling decisions deserve a little time to think, compare samples, and talk it over with whoever else lives in the house.
We'd rather you take your samples home, look at them in your own lighting, and call us back when you're ready than rush you into a decision you're not sure about.
Ask About the Brands They Carry
The brands a company works with tell you something about who they are. We carry Mohawk, Shaw, MSI, Daltile, and COREtec — established names with real warranties behind them, not unbranded material that showed up in a truck with no paper trail.
Ask what's under the samples they're showing you. A contractor who can't tell you the manufacturer or product line is a contractor who may not be able to help you if something goes wrong down the road.
Trust How They Talk to You
This one's harder to put a checklist around, but it matters. Does the person walking your home explain things clearly, or talk over your head? Do they answer your questions directly, or dodge them? Do they seem more interested in solving your problem or closing the sale?
A good contractor treats an estimate like a conversation with a neighbor, not a sales pitch. That's the standard we hold ourselves to, and it's a fair standard to hold anyone else to as well.
A Contract Worth Trusting Is a Contract in Writing
Before any work begins, get the scope, materials, and timeline in writing. Verbal agreements are hard to enforce and easy to misremember once the job is underway. A written estimate protects both sides and gives you something to point back to if questions come up later.
Bringing It Home
None of this is complicated, but it's easy to skip when you're excited to get a project started. Slow down for the vetting, and the rest of the project tends to go smoothly.
