What to consider
Choose the tile with the countertop
The backsplash, countertop and cabinets are seen together, so choose them together. Bring a sample of your countertop or cabinet finish if you have one, or photos of the room. Tile size, color and finish change how busy or calm the wall looks, and grout color can either blend in or outline every piece.
Pick a pattern and layout
A straight-set subway, a herringbone or a mosaic sheet each read differently on the wall. Discuss where the pattern starts, how it is centered on a range, sink or vanity, and where cuts will land at the ends and around outlets. Those decisions are easier to make before installation than to change afterward.
Decide where the tile stops
Some backsplashes run a short height above the counter; others continue up to the cabinets or cover the full wall behind a vanity. Talk about how the edges will be finished where the tile meets a painted wall, a window or the end of a cabinet run, so the finishing details are part of the proposal.
Coordinate with the rest of the room
